Windows Slate for Vista Public Preview Available NOW!Posted by Brian Hough on 2009-09-11 20:08:42 BST

So, if you've checked out AeroXP, or JoeJoe, or DeviantART, or my Twitter feed lately, you'd know I've been working on a not-so-secret project called Windows Slate for Vista - which was my attempt to recreate the Windows Slate visual style found in Longhorn Build 4053 on the modern Windows Vista operating system.
A week ago I finally made available to everybody the first Public Preview release of my visual style. It includes all the major groundwork for the theme, an easy to use installer, and an appealing alternative to Windows Aero Basic. UNFORTUNATELY I forgot to post about it on my home page, but hey, I'm doing so now, so whatever.
You can check out screenshots, release notes, and download links to Windows Slate for Vista here.
P.S.: I've pretty much put the finished touches on Public Preview 2, and I'll just build the installer and change over the homepage over the weekend. Expect it no later than Sunday, but I may find some sort of source of inspiration and finish it tonight. It'll fix many of the bugs found in the first Public Preview, and add some little things here and there to make it more like the original.

I Gawsh Done'd Broked ItPosted by Brian Hough on 2009-08-20 06:39:17 BST

Yep. I gawsh done'd broke the site. Actually, just getting, it's a wee bit more complicated than that but that's essentially what happened.
I had been using a server provided to me by an old friend who I had met over an IRC server a long time ago, and about a week ago now, he shut his server down, causing Servo-Macs go down as well. This also brought down my other side projects, as well as all the content I had built up - the Image Uploader, my beta software community SafeBetas, and most importantly the love of my life, Haverwiki.
The good news: obviously, we found a new server. It's probably not the most permanent of solutions, but for the time being it works spiffy enough. Gotta thank my dearest dad for helping me find the servers, and for helping me set them up and get them up and running. =)
He also had a second amazing idea of his own the very same day - while I was walking around the house, moping to anybody who'd spare me a glance about the lost articles on our dearest Haverwiki, he remembered that Google frequently crawls the interwebs, caching websites.
Which means that all of Haverwiki's featured articles, plus some, were saved. :D So dad saves the day!

Also took this as a perfect opportunity to change the site up a bit - I'm trying out, again under my dad's suggestion, my latest completely 100% home-made Servo-Macs Layout, which I had previously entitled SMb4. It's not done, but I'll be putting some finishing touches to the layout soon, and make everything link to where their supposed to and such. The blog works, though, and that's as good an omen as we can ask for!
Secondly, for the time being, both SafeBetas and the Image Uploader will be going offline. I may bring them back some day - but this server just doesn't have the means that the old one did, not to mention that I'd like to focus on the blog, my homework, and Haverwiki the most....
...which brings me to my third point. Changes to Haverwiki. No, nothing's *really* changing, and what is changing should be completely transparent. We've actually splintered Haverwiki onto a second server - which means that, for whatever reason if Servo-Macs was to go down, Haverwiki will (hopefully) stay up. If you've already got http://servo-macs.com/wiki bookmarked, though, never fear - that bookmark will still work! It'll simply automagically forward you onto the new server, http://haverwiki.freehostia.com. Neat, right?

Also, I beg of everybody, please, please, if you've got an article you think would be funny to see on Haverwiki, take a stab at writing it! We could use some fresh blood and all of your support!
Please check me out on Twitter!
